The correct type of orthesis is selected by the hand therapist to immobilise structures during healing and allow uninvolved joints to move freely. These range from pre-fabricated splints and braces to the individual construction of customised orthopedic splints and casts. Various materials are used including thermoplastics, Scotch- and Softcast. Static splinting is used to immobilise and rest body parts, while dynamic splinting is used to promote movement.
